I posted in In Disguise, but didn't get much of a response....
Anyone know of any resources for making furry chaps? Patterns available locally, hints, tips....? Anyone made these before, and have wisdom to share?
JoAnne Fabrics in Emeryville just had 50% off their fur stuff (through this weekend!), and I got some pretty blue fur for $3.50 a yard- party on!! Their selection sucks, but if you need grey or green, it's the place to be.

Re: Furry chaps?
Thu, November 4, 2004 - 10:51 AMI bought about $200 worth of cheapo JoAnne fabric. I have so many projects, it's rad.
As for chaps, what I do is make some basic pants. Pajama pants works well. And then I modify and tailor them as required. I made a SWEET pair for this girl right before halloween. They were skin-tight, totally custom and super sexy. See my online journal for a pic: www.jovino.com/journal.php
The project took a couple of days because of the nature of the design, but it's possible to whip out a pair in less than an hour. I'm available to assist and mentor where needed. :)
Mmmm, chaps! -

Re: Furry chaps?
Thu, November 4, 2004 - 4:23 PMThanks!!! Great picture.
Question, though...once I make the pants & basically cut out the ass & the crotch.... how do they fasten? Belt apparatus? I've never actually WORN a pair of chaps, so I'm more clueless there... -

Re: Furry chaps?
Thu, November 4, 2004 - 4:52 PMI made a pair of furry chaps for burning man. No pics though. Basically a pair of pants with the ass and crotch cut out. Be carefull of how much you cut out though. I like to wear mine over undies at burning man, and I cut them so that they would go around my butt cheaks, showing off the entire butt, but not skin (when worn with briefs). Same thing with the front.
As for fastening them. Imagine a 2 inch strip going around the entire waist. I actually sewed the back strip together, and for the front used a system of buttons so i could adjust the fit, depending on if i'm wearing jeans underneath or not.
For more suggestions, try googling 'Folsom Street Fair' or 'gay leather' and find some pics online of what they look like. Might give you some ideas.

Re: Furry chaps?
Fri, November 5, 2004 - 2:50 PMThere's a few of ways to fasten them...
The white pair has tabs/belt loops on the top, and you simply run a belt thru them. they are two separate pieces.
On my other pair of chaps, I kept the waist intact (where the elastic normally goes), and just cut out the crotch/butt. Then I cut the waist open and ran a thin belt thru the loop of fabric. It allows me to buckle it. This way they are just one piece.
You might even be able to attach a buckle to the waistline and put some grommets on the other side to serve as the holes to close the buckle. -

Furry Chaps
Tue, December 19, 2006 - 1:35 PMHey, all:
I'm new to this tribe, and am currently working on a pair of stilt chaps that I intend to embellish with fur flames, all up the legs.
My question is this -- does anyone have any experience with cutting flame shapes out of fur? I'm envisioning this in my head and if I cut the flames with the fur nap going down, as you'd normally have it, the fur would hang down and obscure the shapes. I'm thinking of cutting the flame shapes with the fur nap pointing up, the wrong way. That would make it spiky and more flame-like, I think, and allow the flame shapes in the underlying fabric to be revealed. I have the prettiest da-glo orange silky fur with hot pink tips, and I think it would be just gorgeous on the brown faux crocodile fabric I'm using for the chaps. I don't want to have to resort to shearing the fur so as to show off the flame shapes, since that would cut off the pretty pink tips.
Am I making any sense?

Re: Furry Chaps
Sun, December 24, 2006 - 5:37 PMi've done fur to fur contrasting insets, but they are time consuming, patience trying, and a bitch.
if you are sewing fur to faux skin, try a simple overlay, fur over skin. the fur should mask its own zig zagged topstitching, and you ca go as detailed as you like since it is on top of the skin fabric.
