Hey, all:
I'm new to this tribe, and am currently working on a pair of stilt chaps that I intend to embellish with fur flames, all up the legs.
My question is this -- does anyone have any experience with cutting flame shapes out of fur? I'm envisioning this in my head and if I cut the flames with the fur nap going down, as you'd normally have it, the fur would hang down and obscure the shapes. I'm thinking of cutting the flame shapes with the fur nap pointing up, the wrong way. That would make it spiky and more flame-like, I think, and allow the flame shapes in the underlying fabric to be revealed. I have the prettiest da-glo orange silky fur with hot pink tips, and I think it would be just gorgeous on the brown faux crocodile fabric I'm using for the chaps. I don't want to have to resort to shearing the fur so as to show off the flame shapes, since that would cut off the pretty pink tips.
Am I making any sense?
Blysse

Re: Flame Shapes in Fur
Wed, December 20, 2006 - 12:26 AMhey blysse,
i saw this post in another thread, but replying here seemed to be more appropriate....
a lot of the shape's definition depends on the length of the fur nap on the two different fabrics that you are using. If it's too long, a lot of the definition will get lost, and you are anticipating. If inverted, fur does some interesting things. The nap will poof out and with enough wear and tear it might wind up mating and dreading. This is not to say it's a bad thing, it's just something to consider before startign your project. If you have some extra yardage, make some testers and see how it's all going to work.
As for the shapes, I suggest you sketch what you want on some paper. Large-tablet sketch or tracing paper works well since it can be trimmed down to make a pattern. Once you have your shapes that you are happy with, add on an additional 1/4" - 1/2" for the seam allowances on both sides -- one grows in one direction, the other grows opposite. If you calculate your seeam allowances correctly, once you stitch it all together, it should look roughly like your sketch. because of the thickness of fur, sharp points will prove to be challenging. One way to make them work better is to trim the tip perpendicular to the seam at the pointy part to allow for the fabric to better form to the shape.
I'm hardly on tribe, so drop me a line if you want some more tips. You can find me at bunnywarez.com.

Re: Flame Shapes in Fur
Wed, December 20, 2006 - 3:53 PMI have a friend who made a fur jacket with flame shapes on it. It came out great.
I would suggest practice. Also, you may not be able to get the best detail if you use a sewing machine. You may want to draw a pattern out on paper, so that you can use that to trace onto the fur, as you will want to add a seam allowance to both the inside piece and the outside piece. The tips will be the hardest part, as you will want a nice sharp point, which is extremely difficult to do with the seam allowance and especially using a sewing machine. I always have much less of a seam allowance for fine tip insets (in may case, the tips of a star, didn't want them to be rounded), and I will hand sew those edges to get that nce fine tip.
Hope this makes sense. So hard to type on here as I can't see the text I type until I resize my browser window. Gawd, I need mac os 10.4 badly.
