ventilation/cooling?

topic posted Mon, October 8, 2007 - 11:50 PM by  spacehippy
Anyone where these suits in the day time? I've been building a very shiny cat fursuit for halloween, but i nolonger live in a cold enough climate to wear it for any length of time.

I've already made the long legs and sleaves removable with snaps and added large opening in the armpits.

Some addition steps i've been thinking about include:
-PC fans
-ice
-peltier type drink coolers

Does anyone have experience cooling these things or incorporating the ideas i've had?

Thanks a ton!

much love, matt

I've done a lot of stuff in regards to cooling. If you have a head, then fans on the inside are pretty important. I have them blowing into my face and exhausting out the top. This gives me good airflow and keeps the head cooler. I've also worn ice-packs in a custom vest when I did a parade on a really hot day. A camelbak under the suit helps for on-the-go hydration too.

ice packs sounds like a awesome idea! No head for me. I've seen your construction howto (very nice) and it might be a bit much for my first attempt. I'm planning to either make a hood and hat with the ears on it.

      Thanks much!

I've been curious about this too.

I know all about the cpu fan in the head, but have grown more interested in cooling vests. But there's so many different styles and designs. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Preferably not the type that needs to be stuck in a freezer for hours, and worn immediatly after being taken out of the freezer, as I am often far away from electricity when I fursuit.

Look for vests that have lots of packs.

A bunch of then out there don't work on ice packs per se, but have packs that are filled with a non-toxic chamical that phase changes from solid to liquid at about 50F. They are uusally good for about two hours or so.

Since the phase change happens at 50F once can place the packs in ice water (which is naturally 32F ) and they freeze solid in about half an hour. providing two hours of cooling time.

A few furs I've met have a couple sets of cooling packs. One set inthe vest and another set chilling in a small cooler for a quick swap out.

Just google cooling vest.....Your looking for a vest with packs. Evaporative vests just wont work in suit.

          I made my own.

I used a cycling jersey since it supposedly "wicks" away moisture, then I stitched pouches on it to hold icepacks that I toss in the freezer.

I've only used it twice 'cause I'm not a hardocre suiter.
